It's priced that way to discourage people changing characters' names frequently. High enough that people won't make joke names all the time, low enough that it's accessible to players who don't buy gems with money, and it being the same price as a character slot means someone opting for it over a new character is more likely to pick a serious name rather than one that's reportable.
SoftFootpaws.9134. Its not a bug with Mesmer, its a bug with naming in general. They said this can't be fixed right now, as its built on top of the old world system and won't change until that system is permanently disabled and replaced (meaning Alliances release). When the naming system is fixed, it'll fix the Mesmer clones too.
Create one symbol for each rank title (invader, recruit, scout, etc), and give them one color for each tier (gray, bronze, silver, etc). These would appear before player names, like level/mastery rank in PvE. When simple nameplates is enabled, we'd see just the title icon followed by the guild tag next to it.
